Industrial biotechnology is working towards producing chemical products using biocatalysis or new production strains. In order to achieve this goal, a broad spectrum of methods has been developed. Screening and optimization of enzymes with new functions, their expression and the construction of new metabolic pathways as well as their regulation are familiar challenges in this field of research. Of increasing importance are computer simulations to reduce the lab work but also to gain insides.

In recent years, it has become evident that there are other approaches for bioengineering: The channeling of substrates, metabolites and products to and from the catalytic centers of enzymes, within synthesis particles or microorganisms and even between individual cells or even different microorganisms. Today we know channels and loop areas of enzymes as starting points for the optimization of enzymes and synthesis vesicles. These allow the control of toxic compounds and metabolic traffic as well as the exchange of metabolites between cells and syntheses within the entire consortia.

In this workshop, new developments will be presented and we discuss whether we can expect these new systems and their control to contribute to a more efficient development in both enzyme engineering and metabolic engineering.
