Study of the mechanism of the DNMT1 DNA methyltransferase

The DFG is funding our work to investigate the mechanism of DNMT1 methyltransferase as part of the Priority Program "Chemical Biology of Natural Nucleic Acid Modifications". DNMT1 is a DNA methyltransferase essential for mammalian development that plays a central role in epigenetic processes. We intend to gain new insights into the detailed mechanism of this enzyme by single-molecule studies that show how it recognizes and finds its target sites on DNA.
