The DFG is funding our work
to investigate the mechanism of DNMT1 methyltransferase as part of the Priority Program "Chemical
Biology of Natural Nucleic Acid Modifications". DNMT1 is a DNA methyltransferase essential for
mammalian development that plays a central role in epigenetic processes. We intend to gain new
insights into the detailed mechanism of this enzyme by single-molecule studies that show how it
recognizes and finds its target sites on DNA.
